Floating Felt Gallery - abstract textile (fibre) art |
Fine, translucent, abstract textile (fibre) art pictures, using wool and other fibres (especially metallic thread or fabric), typically with uneven edges and utilising a very wide palette of colours. Some pieces, like Jack and Kiss Kiss, I classify as 'conceptual' art.
These textile art pieces are framed by sandwiching between sheets of 4mm-thick clear acrylic sheet, fastened with small brass bolts and hung from nylon line. They are ideally hung slightly away from the wall, giving a feeling of floating in three dimensions. The wall behind need not be white, since the piece will 'interact' with the wall colour behind. Spotlights bring a vibrancy to the pictures, by reflecting off metallic, or other shiny, elements in them.
Another possibility is to hang one in front of a window, which highlights the fibres used - or to light them from behind (see my 'Art Lights' gallery for examples of these).
During the last couple of years, I've been moving away from the typically 'textile art' ragged-edge look and more towards pieces arranged in 'tiles', in various different formats - as shown in several of my newer textile art pieces on this page.
